Photo Credit: Spotify The Car Thing’s main purpose remains the same, it’s supposed to be able to bring and mirror the Spotify listening experience to older cars who don’t have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.

Spotify says that four mics that line the top of the device ensure the device can hear voice commands even with the windows down or the volume turned up. Only thing that lights up is the ignition button in white. Now though, it’s available to the masses (In the U.S.) for 89.99 (Php4,590). Much like other voice-activated smart devices, hands-free navigation works by prompting “Hey Spotify,” before asking for a playlist, podcast, song, or artist. The device is compatible with vehicles regardless of make or model and will display a home screen, voice-controlled search function, and a Your Library tab. For a car device, you want some navigational capabilities, and I’m not sure if Spotify would ever integrate that into its offerings (or work with a third-party maps app) to make Car Thing more useful.

While Spotify explicitly stated that it is focused on its streaming service as opposed to becoming a hardware company, it added that it created the gadget “because we saw a need from our users, many of whom were missing out on a seamless and personalised in-car listening experience.” Car Thing is merely a Bluetooth accessory for your phone to play back your Spotify library, and that’s pretty much it. Now, the company has officially unveiled its Spotify-specific knobbed screen for accessing playlists and podcasts on the go.

Hints that Car Thing was on the way had surfaced recently both in FCC filings as well as iOS code. Spotify’s touchscreen and voice-activated car gadget has finally arrived as a limited release to some eligible users in the U.S.
